Carolyn was born on March 10th 1933 in (St Vincents MTY Hospital) a home for unwed mothers in Baltimore Maryland. She said time were hard and her parents Jeanette Thilmany and Edouard Gueydon could not afford anything else. She was the third of four children.
She grew up around E. 21st Street. She got a degree in education in Towson Md. She taught in Sioux City Iowa, Howard County, and Baltimore County schools.

She married Norman Windell Houk on June 25, 1955.
